More Than Conquerors

(from Partners International)

You may remember us sharing the story last year of a group of six Middle Eastern believers who were on their way to a house church meeting when they realized they were being followed. Suddenly, the car behind them crashed into their car. Five men exited the car armed with iron bars and sticks. They dragged the believers out of their vehicle and brutally beat them.

When the police and paramedics arrived, they found the believers in very serious condition. One brother, Asif, had fractures to his arms, feet, legs, and back. The bones in his leg were so badly crushed, doctors thought his leg might have to be amputated. One woman would later pass away from her injuries.

The victims come from a very conservative Islamic tribe. They came to know Christ through the witness of Brother Nasir who has been sharing the Gospel with this tribe, his own, for several years. The believers’ parents are violently opposed to their children’s Christian faith, believing they have brought dishonor and shame to their family and tribe.

Three weeks after this incident, a stranger approached Asif demanding to know where Brother Nasir was. When Asif replied that he didn’t know, the stranger pulled out a gun and shot him in the stomach. Asif would barely survive a nine-hour surgery to repair the damage.

To this day, the survivors of this attack face constant threats to their safety from their families and communities.

These brothers are not alone. Each year, an estimated 150,000 Christians are martyred for their belief in Christ. And more than 200 million Christians suffer significant restrictions as they live out their faith.

This Sunday (November 3), on the International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church, join us in prayer for suffering brothers and sisters in Christ like Asif and Nasir. Ask God to enable them to stand firm in His strength and power. Pray for their boldness and faithfulness, and that God would cover them with His mighty protection and provision. They rely on our prayers!
“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? As it is written: “For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.” No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us” (Romans 8:35-37).
