Kazakhstan: Pastor facing extradition to Uzbekistan for religious offences

A pastor is facing extradition to Uzbekistan, where he is wanted for violating the country’s harsh religion law.

Makhset Dzhabbergenov fled his homeland to Kazakhstan in 2007 following a prolonged campaign of harassment against him by the Uzbek secret police.

He was arrested earlier this month pending his extradition to Uzbekistan, where he is wanted for “crimes” relating to his Christian activities: violating the procedure for teaching religious doctrine and the dissemination of materials with religious content.

The detention of Pastor Dzhabbergenov coincided with an official visit by the President of Uzbekistan to Kazakhstan.
