The Southside Community Church of the Nazarene in Port Alberni, British Columbia, caught fire Tuesday morning, but there were no injuries.
Pastor Cal Barber, who co-pastors the church with wife, Melanie, is glad the fire happened when it did.
“We had a candlelight service on Christmas Eve that was very well attended and thank goodness it didn’t happen then,” Barber told the Alberni Valley News. “We’re grateful that no one was injured.”
The Port Alberni Fire Department is investigating the cause of the fire, but the assistant fire chief said it’s too early to cite a cause.
It seems the fire is a mystery to everyone.
“There’s more questions right now than answers,” Barber told Alberni Valley News.
According to witnesses, the fire left the building gutted.
Barber said the church will not be discouraged by the damage.
“The Lord’s church is the people, the building isn’t the church,” he said to a reporter. “This is not going to set us back.”
Barber said Canada Pacific District Superintendent Earl Wood will be arriving to assist with the situation and the church board will discuss the continuance of services.
